What is a Surf Skate

Can I use a surf skate if I've never surfed?
Absolutely! While surf skates are excellent surf training tools, they're incredibly fun for anyone who enjoys carving, flow, and a unique riding experience. Many non-surfers discover surf skates and become hooked on the sensation — some even start surfing afterward. No surfing experience required to enjoy land surfing.
Do surf skates actually improve your surfing?
Yes — that's exactly what they're built for. The pivoting truck geometry mirrors rail-to-rail surfing, so you can train pumping for speed, cutbacks, snaps and flow on flat days, and the balance and muscle memory transfer straight to the water. Thruster trucks (same family as Carver C7, YOW and SmoothStar) feel closest to a wave, while Gravity trucks deliver the same training with a faster, snappier feel. Many surf coaches use surf skates as their go-to dry-land training tool.
Are surf skates good exercise?
Seriously good. Pumping a surf skate is a full-body workout — your legs, glutes and core all work together to generate speed without your foot ever touching the ground. What's the difference between a surf skate and a cruiser?
A cruiser is built for easy pushing and relaxed rides — stable, simple and perfect for getting around. A surf skate adds a pivoting truck system so you can generate speed by pumping and carve much deeper, just like surfing. Are surf skates good for beginners?
Yes, with a small learning curve. The responsive trucks take some getting used to — they're much more sensitive than regular skateboards. Start on flat, smooth ground, wear protective gear, and practice balance and gentle turns first. Many beginners actually find surf skates more intuitive than traditional skateboards because the movements mimic natural body mechanics.
What's the best surface for surf skating?
Smooth, flat concrete is ideal — think basketball courts, tennis courts, smooth parking lots, and dedicated paths. Surf skates handle slight slopes well for learning to pump downhill. Avoid rough asphalt, gravel, grass, wet surfaces, and steep hills while learning. The smoother the surface, the better the carve.
What size surf skate should I get?
All our surf skates have the same wheelbase, so the carving performance is identical across sizes. The difference is deck length:
• 30" board — More compact and portable. Great for kids, smaller adults, or anyone under 6 feet tall.
• 32" board — Larger deck gives more foot room and confidence. Ideal if you're over 6 feet, have bigger feet, or just prefer extra stability.
Quick rule: Under 6 feet? Go 30". Over 6 feet? Go 32".

Standard shipping typically takes 2–6 business days for QLD, NSW and VIC, and 3–14 business days for TAS, SA, WA and NT (rural areas can take longer). Orders over $180 qualify for FREE shipping Australia-wide (excluding WA, which ships at a flat $9). Most surf skate orders ship the same day or next business day.
